WADIRUM
What
kind of music does WadiRum play? When asked that
question, each member of the band says something a little different. Perhaps
what defines the band best is a sense of musical variety. The five members
have roots in a fairly common set of genres: folk, rock, jazz, etc., but what
comes out when they play together is somehow different from all of these.
Stewart Erlich (vocals and guitars) has been
writing songs since he was in seventh grade, and played around the east coast
for several years before moving to Colorado
and co-founding WadiRum with the Illinois songwriter, Jill Pilon. Jill Pilon (vocals and
guitars) has been playing in Colorado
for over four years, and her voice has been hailed by critics as "crowd
hushing and spell-binding." Jesse Varner (bass) grew up in Arvada, and has been playing in Colorado since high school. Through his
years playing in jazz and fusion projects, his playing has developed into a
distinctly recognizable style, one that finds melody and harmony while still anchoring a deep
groove. Wesley Michaels (cello) is just as comfortable playing in punk bands
as he is playing with symphonies. His diverse sounds and rich tones add
darkness and depth to already lush compositions. Adam Randall (drums), a Minnesota native, has been writing, performing, and
recording the styles of rock, funk, fusion, and jazz for 14 years, and
recently moved to Colorado
where he plays in several groups and teaches drum lessons. Nicole Torres, the
very brilliant Denver songwriter, had this to say of Wadirum:
"Basically, your music is a manifestation of the ultra-melodious
symbiosis among 5 individual instruments. It's peaceful but provoctive, simple but sophisticated, beautiful but
strange and completely without genre....I'll probably have to write a song to express
how great I think ya'll are."
